Creative Endeavors Inspired by Nature
Kathy Miller Portrait and photography studio is located in Joshua Tree, CA and open by appointment. I have been a portrait photographer since 2004 and specialize in professional headshots, all couple and family photography, and photographing artwork for artists. Since moving to Joshua Tree in 2017, my art has expanded beyond just portrait photography.
My creative art comes from a place that changes and evolves based on influences in my life from an encounter with nature’s environment and the immediate availability of a medium. A neck injury limits my use of the heavy Canon I used to carry on hikes and walks. The Canon is reserved for portrait work. The iPhone has been a great field substitute that evolved into capturing images that I make into abstracts. For other mediums, I enjoy using pencils to sketch on paper, watercolor, India ink pens, acrylic paints, and lately, alcohol ink. So, for my art, I create for me. If others like it, that’s a bonus.
I am the daughter of an artist, musician, dress maker, and business owner. She was ambitious, a loyal friend, and to tell her no, only made her that more determined. At my age now, I see how much we were alike. She died when I was 27. I am grateful for the way she encouraged me to not give up, don’t be afraid to try new things, and to embrace new experiences. My father was an electrical engineer who grew up on a dairy farm in rural Georgia. From my father I learned that integrity and honesty matter, and to never prejudge anyone based on their skin color. Because of my parents, I think it gave me the foundation to be open to new experiences, which ultimately came to mean being a creative is the best "job" one can have. To be a good artist, you first have to be honest with yourself.
Causes that matter to me: Protecting the environment, the rights of Ingenious People, MMIW, Autism Speaks. Encouraging the freedom of expression through the ARTS. "Out in the Country" is THE song for me. It sums up perfectly why I live in a quiet place close to nature.
