Under transformation - check back on Feb. 1, 2019
Creative endeavors inspired by nature is a driving force behind the artworks of Kathy Miller, a resident of Joshua Tree, CA. Her photography often captures environmental contrasts from natural to human impact. Rain and wildflowers in the desert, evidence of climate change, and wildlife destruction. Kathy doesn’t shy away from computer manipulation in her images, including black and white, inverted, restyled, cartooned, or tweaked to add mysterious drama. As a painter, Kathy Miller is self-taught, and just beginning the journey of expression on canvas and wood. Her mother was a painter and musician. Christmas presents often included paint sets, sketch pads, brushes, charcoal pencils and How to Draw books. Frustrated at drawing people, but pretty good at trees, Kathy eventually gave up trying. Moving to Joshua Tree opened her eyes and new artist friends began to inspire her to try painting. Kathy took a class in Joshua Tree National Park on Seeing Art in Nature, and the fire was lit. She now has a fully stocked art studio in her home. Equal rights, Me-Too, Standing Rock, and corporate greed themes often find their way into her paintings. Trees, you’ll notice a lot of trees in her work. Kathy has been drawn to trees since she was a little girl growing up in Georgia. She was a tree climber of pine, sycamore, and oak. Being in the top of a pine to watch a storm blow in wasn’t uncommon. Kathy was gifted with nearby streams, woodlands, and mountains. She had friends with horses, and riding through the woods, in the deep shadows of the trees, is how she spent some of her summers. She feels at home in the woods. Sadly, with climate change, trees are suffering. It is a delicate balancing act, and nature suffers at the hands of man. It is projected that the Joshua Tree will be gone from the park within the lifetime of her grandchildren. The historic range of pinion pines and juniper are also suffering. So yes, you’ll see a lot of trees in her artwork. Email me at email@example.com or use the Contact Page.
